Confessions of a Co-op Student

For the past five months, my coop experience at Sweet World Media has been a roller coaster! One day I could chat up a storm with a million things thrown at me and then the next I wouldn’t utter a peep and have to search for work to do.

Before coming to Sweet World Media, I never thought about writing or even web and graphic design. I now understand that there is so much more to design then just pasting stuff together. It takes patience and attention to detail.

With my track record with essays at school, writing has never been much fun for me. Who knew that writing random essays from school and writing about something I care about could be so different? I definitely didn’t and was pleasantly surprised how great my first article turned out.

The Uxbridge story was a hit! People close to me even thought Kirsty and Carly helped me write it! I didn’t know if that was a compliment or not and to be honest Since then I have been writing the local Products page for Uxbridge Town Talk.

Only good experiences came out of working with the Sweet World Media staff. They have taught me many things that aren’t even relevant to their career. I am a shy person and always have been when it comes to new people, especially people who I’m trying to impress, so you don’t even want to know how terrified I was when I started. After a few weeks of being quiet and shy, I finally told myself to get over my shyness and throw in a few words here and there! That seemed to do the trick.

My favourite moment there was when I decided to clean out the kettle. So I put in some soap and water and turned it on and went back to my very important tasks. After a while, I started to hear a weird noises coming from the kitchen. Both Dana and I looked at each other then glanced in the kitchen and saw water and bubbles everywhere! We both jump up and, because I’m a genius, grabbed the handle which was covered in boiling water.

Dana and I totally kept our cool. We didn’t just stare as water and bubbles came pouring out of it. And we certainly did not panic and scream. Luckily, Dana had the brilliant idea to unplug the menacing machine spewing boiling water.  After we calmed down and assessed the situation, it was hard not to laugh. Water was all over the floor, there was a massive puddle of water on the table and my hand was nice and red. We tried to keep quiet and clean up before Carly noticed, but with those heightened mother senses, she knew we were causing trouble.

But look on the bright side; everything was sparkling clean when we were done!

My not so favourite moment was when I had to answer the phones when the trusty Rebecca wasn’t there. I hate phones; well I don’t hate them, I just prefer not to talk to them. The first time I answered the phone, Rebecca had her hands full so it was show time! So feeling confident, I answered.

What came out of my mouth was definitely not what was intended. I said, “Sweet World Media Rebecca speaking.” That would have been fine because that’s the dandy thing about phones, you can’t see who’s answering them. But instead, I made an already sticky situation even more of a mess and added, “Sweet World Media Rebachel speaking”.

It was my worst fear! My face went hot and red and the poor person on the other end was utterly confused. I didn’t blame them; I didn’t even understand what I said. I honestly don’t remember a thing the victim said, I just wanted to get the heck off the phone ASAP! I don’t know if anyone heard my slip-up and if they did, have thankfully not brought it up.

All in all, my experience here has been incredible. Kirsty and Carly have been very patient and understanding with me and I appreciate the opportunity to work with them. I would recommend them to anyone without hesitation. They are the best of the best! Thank you very much Carly and Kirsty for putting up with me and giving me a great co-op experience. And thank you Rebecca for your patience and your hard work trying to not face palm me when I’m slow.
